1957 Anderson Bay Kindergarten was opened. Now named Bayfield Kindergarten.
Bayfield Kindergarten is nestled in a back section with a large outdoor area bursting with native flora and fauna. Our extensive outdoor play area provides ample opportunity for development of motor skills, social skills, exploration and discovery. Bayfield prides itself on modelling sustainability through our vegetable gardens, composting and worm farm. We foster a sense of environmental responsibility through our menagerie of animals (budgies, chickens, mice, rabbits and seasonal insects) whose habits, life cycles and care the children learn to respect and nurture.
We celebrate the cultural diversity of each family, while honouring the bicultural nature of New Zealand through the languages, myths and tīkanga of Aotearoa. Our indoor environment is resourced with stimulating, engaging and age-appropriate equipment, with a emphasis on art, ICT, music and science. Ours is an active and co-operative community of learners with staff, children, families and the wider community working together to ask question, find answers and explore ideas.
We implement a programme based on the Principles, Strands and Goals of the NZ Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Wháriki. Using Te Wháriki as a foundation, our programme is structured around fostering your child’s dispositional development, preparing him/her to become a reflective, active, and lifelong learner. Interwoven throughout this pedagogical approach is Art Costa’s Habits of Mind, a learning philosophy comprised of 16 thinking practices that help children and adults develop critical and creative thinking skills.
